I have had a Facebook account since it first came out. The first year that the website started, MySpace was a huge deal, but a lot of people were looking for something more grown up and more sophisticated. Facebook was simpler, easier, and had a more "adult" feeling. There wasn't as much customization, but that was a good thing. It was just something simple to keep in touch with friends. Facebook ads were more evident than MySpace ads but they weren't a big deal.
The wayFacebook ads have progressed is very interesting. It used to be relatively random as to what ads that you would get when you were signed in. You would get the same ads as everyone else. Now, Facebook looks at what you talk about and like and gives you ads that are personalized for you.
The way that they read everything that you post is a little odd. The fact that they know what you like or do not like and send you personalized ads is a weird thing to think about. It is almost like Facebook is stalking you and trying to find things that you like.
Overall though, you have to understand where Facebook is coming from. Their website lives solely off of ads, and the more people that click, the more money they make. Finding a way to figure out what people are more likely to click on is a great way to increase revenue and help their website. If you were to see something you are not interested in, there is no chance you would click on it.
Although they do have this method, there are still times where you see an ad that has nothing to do with anything that you have ever talked about or even thought about. Not once have I ever talked about or liked anything that has to do with energy drinks, and yet I get those ads all the time. It is an odd system that works for the most part but I am sure has some flaws.
